FAYVE

MEDIA DISCOVERY

STREAMING AGGREGATOR

CIRCA: 2012

ROLE

Principal Interface Designer

DESIGN STATEMENT

This critically-acclaimed app was born out of the need to find something good to watch in a vast personal media collection. Fayve aggregated a massive database of movies and TV shows from multiple streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and iTunes and presented them in a nifty 3D package.

I had the privilege to lead every creative aspect of this fun project. I enjoyed the ability to flex my talents in 3D space in the waning days of the skeuomorphism movement.

LEADERSHIP

PRODUCT STRATEGY

As a member of Fayve's Steering Committee representing UX, I played a pivotal role the holistic vision for the project.

Collectively, we prioritized the feature roadmap, aligned resources, secured budget, and communicated direction inwardly and outwardly.

DISCOVERY

FEATURE DEFINITION

Throughout all stages of Fayve, I facilitated blue-sky brainstorming exercises with users, stakeholders and engineers to determine user needs and user journeys.

I utilized mind maps like the one pictured to collaboratively organize application architecture, visualize decision trees, and prioritize critical to-dos.

INTERACTION DESIGN

CONCEPTUAL MODEL

I rendered this concept in 3D Studio Max to illustrate how Fayve would provide a fun way for users to traverse the immense amount of data provided by our streaming partners.

INTERACTION DESIGN

WIREFRAMES

Working closely with the Senior Interface Designer, we created wireframes to demonstrate how users would navigate from one section to another.

These were used in pitch presentations to primary stakeholders, executives, and engineers to provide clarity on upcoming sprints and iron out any interaction issues before committing them to visual design.

VISUAL DESIGN

MOOD BOARD

Once the general interaction model was devised, I set about on determining Fayve's look and feel. I felt the project called for an old movie house aesthetic, so I collected images from around the web that reflected that tone.

If you look closely at some of these images, you can see a direct correlation in the final product of Fayve.

ASSETS

From full sprite-sheets to 3D textures to star-filled backgrounds, every visual asset for Fayve passed through my hands.

ANIMATION PROTOTYPE

During the course of the project, I designed many of these frame-by-frame animation references to articulate design intent to engineers.

This particular animation demonstrated navigating between primary and secondary sections while leaving a breadcrumb trail between pivots.
